September 20-24

Almost two weeks in already! I have heard from a few parents that they are amazed at how tired their children are at night.  Who knew that all of that brain work could be so exhausting?!  This is a good reminder of how vital bedtimes and healthy breakfasts can be for students of all ages.

Next week we will continue to increase how much we accomplish during the day at school.  The fourth-graders will have their first math test on Monday, and the third-graders will have their test on Thursday.  Both grade levels will be finishing up their first novel of the year and will be completing a final wrap-up activity for their novels.  Finally, the students will have their usual spelling test on Friday.

Please help your child get into the routine of bringing their library books back and forth from school every day.  There have been several cases these past two weeks where I would give the students time to silent read and work on their A.R. goals, and not everyone had their books at school.   In the past, many families have found that if students put homework and books back into their backpacks as soon as they finished with them, they didn’t have to worry about it in the morning, and it helped to simplify the morning routine.

Speaking of A.R., don’t forget that third-graders are expected to earn three points each month, and fourth-graders are to earn four points each month through A.R. tests.  This is considered an assignment for reading class. Students can check their progress on the A.R. board in the classroom.

So far this year, we have not had a lot of time to devote to Social Studies. Hopefully, this next week we will learn a little about the Native American tribes of Minnesota in Social Studies.

Next week, if all goes as planned, the students should get to do their first hands-on activity in science when they build models of plant and animal cells.
