Next week the students will start on the NWEA MAP testing. The students in grades 3-8 do these tests three times each year. The design of this test is a little different than other tests. Each student will experience a test unique to them. As they answer questions correctly, they will automatically be given more challenging questions. When they respond with an incorrect response, the test will then give them an easier question next. The goal of the testing system is to challenge the student so that they only get about 50% of the questions correct. By doing it this way, NWEA can then zero in on what the student already knows and what skills they are ready to learn more about.
So, how can you help your child prepare for these tests? First, make sure they get a full night’s rest. Secondly, make sure they start their day with a nutritious breakfast. Finally, encourage them to try their hardest and think of it as a fun challenge, like a puzzle.
On Sunday, October 3, the students will be singing “A Closing Prayer” in church at the 9 a.m. church service. We will be singing at the end of the service, right before the benediction. While it is nice to have a big, full group of students there to sing, I know some of you have your regular church home, and I understand if you are not able to sing with us. If your child will NOT be singing, please let me know so I can plan accordingly.
This next week the students will be busy in the classroom in addition to the NWEA tests. The third-grade students will have a math test on Tuesday, and the fourth graders will have a test on Thursday. The usual spelling test will be on Friday. In addition to tests, the students will continue to work on the Social Studies project about a MN County. Wednesday will be the last in-class workday for this. If the students are focused, they should be able to finish these up at school.
Reminder, the October Scholastic Book Order is due tomorrow, Friday. As always, it is optional for your family to purchase books. If you are placing an order, you can either go online and use the class code, or you can send the exact payment to school along with the order form. If you choose to pay by check, please make it out to “Susan Van Houten” so that I can complete the order with a credit card. I know some of you ordered in September and still have not received your books. Scholastic is experiencing a big delay in orders right now. I tried to reach out to them to find out when we might expect shipment, and they did not have an answer to that question.
Here are some important dates for your calendar.
Friday, October 1 Book orders are due
Sunday, October 3 3-5 Sing in church
October 4-8 Fire Prevention Week
Friday, October 15 School Pictures

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out and ask.
